Wednesday Night Wheel-Throwing!

Meets: every other Wednesday evening

Age requirement: 14+

Don’t have time for a full clay course but want to experience the potter’s wheel? Join us for this exciting one-night clay wheel-throwing experience at Quincy Art Center! Participants will receive thirty minutes of instruction for how to throw on the pottery wheel. Afterwards, participants will have up to an hour and a half of independent work time on the wheel with the assistance of our qualified in-house instructor, so come try your hand at this artform and get a little messy with us! Students are welcome to keep anything they make. No experience needed.

This class uses air-dry clay for throwing instead of earthenware or stoneware; finished vessels will be sent home the night of class or left at the Art Center to dry before they can be painted at home. Glazing is not included in this class because the clay vessels will not be fired.

We cannot guarantee that you will successfully wheel-throw a pot during this session. You are not required to keep everything you make.

Graphite Drawing: Everything and the Kitchen Sink

Join us for this four-week drawing class that will explore value, shape, composition, and drawing from life. Students will start by drawing basic shapes and forms before moving onto more complex subject matter and creating their own still life compositions to recreate on paper. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, there’s a place for you to explore, create, and grow with us. In this ten-week Art Club, students will learn to work with clay, watercolor painting, book-making, batik fiber dyeing, and low relief sculpture as they explore art history and cultural art-making methods.

Students (along with their caregivers) will make a variety of artworks and learn about safe, toddler friendly materials that can be used to create them. This class helps boost not only the confidence of the toddlers, but also the confidence of the caregivers to create with their little ones. This class also emphasizes the importance of preserving and displaying artwork, including a weekly rotation of class created artworks on display in the halls of The Art Center.

NOTE: All children are expected to attend each class with a caregiver. The caregiver does not need to register; please only register children.

Oil Painting Pets and Animals

For oil painting animals, students may choose to bring in a reference of a beloved pet or choose a reference provided by the class. With his extensive experience in painting dogs and other animals, the instructor will demonstrate his preferred method for painting hair and combining the elements of art to create a unique animal portrait in oil paint.

NOTE: Oil paint uses solvents and thinners for cleanup; students will use odorless turpenoid instead of regular turpentine, but some materials can still be hazardous if used incorrectly. Only students ages 18 and up may participate in this workshop.

Beginning Woodworking

If you’ve ever wanted to get into woodworking, now is your chance! In this six-week woodworking class led by local woodworking experts, students will learn to: understand and apply proper safety practices as they pertain to the woodworking shop; safely use and care for hand tools; safely use and care for portable and stationary power tools; estimate material requirements, create material lists and cut lists; and, given simple plans, accurately measure, mark, cut, and assemble various projects using hand and power tools.

This class takes place at a woodworking shop located at 824 Hampshire Street in Quincy, IL. All students will be required to sign a liability waiver before the class begins. Parents of younger teens are encouraged to attend.

NOTE: Many supplies will be given to students during the first class. Participating students must bring the following items to class each week:

  • Folder for hand-outs
  • Notebook paper
  • Protective eyewear mandatory (hearing protection is highly recommended)
  • #2 pencils (no pens, mechanical pencils or construction pencils)

Methods in Weaving

Learn how to weave! In this class, students will complete one work of woven art and develop ideas for many more. Weaving methods that will be taught include: tabby/plain weave, loom “basket” weave, Rya knotting, and Soumak weave. No prior weaving experience needed.

Intermediate Watercolor: Applying Color Theory

Color theory in watercolor is important when it comes to color mixing, color matching, and understanding relationships between certain hues on the color wheel. Join us for this four-week watercolor class in which students will learn to create original artwork on cold press paper that will push the boundaries of what color can do!

Some experience with watercolor required; this class will go beyond fundamentals of painting to explore specific aspects of color theory and watercolor usage.

Chihuly-Inspired Plastic Sculpture

In this class, students will learn how to create a piece of artwork in the style of famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. By using plastic plates, cups, and more, students will add their own colors and use heat guns to manipulate the plastic to look like blown glass. Some sculptures will be free-form standing or have the possibility of hanging.

NOTE: This class uses high-temperature heat guns to partially melt and distort plastic. Safety is paramount at the Art Center, so please come prepared to practice safety in our studio while using these dangerous tools.

Introduction to Oil Painting

In this 4-week class, students will build a foundational understanding of oil painting before moving into more in-depth subjects such as color theory, tint/shade mixing, using value to build three-dimensional forms, and composition of an artwork. All students will receive a set of Windsor-Newton oil paints to keep.

Just in time for Easter, learn to empty egg shells in a no-blow clean method and decorate the shells with colorful polymer clay! We will swirl colored modeling dough for a marbled effect, create polka dots, and construct patterns by a very old technique called millefiori.  Student will also receive an important demonstration on baking their creations at home to get a successful result.

Batik Fabric Dyeing

Over three class sessions, students will learn the basics of resist dyeing with melted wax and fabric dye. Participants will get two large bandanas to play with pattern and color. Students will explore different tools to apply the wax and ways to apply the dye to create amazing patterns and designs. Participants are welcome to bring up to a yard of their own prewashed, 100% cotton fabric or a garment (also prewashed and 100% cotton) to use in the class if they wish. This class is great for any fiber person to add to their skill set.

NOTE: This class is messy, so please wear clothes that can stand a splash of color.

Afterwards, participants will have up to an hour and a half of independent work time on the wheel with the assistance of our qualified in-house instructor, so come try your hand at this artform and get a little messy with us! Students are welcome to keep anything they make. No experience needed.

This class uses air-dry clay for throwing instead of earthenware or stoneware; finished vessels will be sent home the night of class or left at the Art Center to dry before they can be painted at home. Glazing is not included in this class because the clay vessels will not be fired.

We cannot guarantee that you will successfully wheel-throw a pot during this session. You are not required to keep everything you make.

If you’ve ever wanted to get into woodworking, now is your chance! In this six-week woodworking class led by local woodworking experts, students will learn to: understand and apply proper safety practices as they pertain to the woodworking shop; safely use and care for hand tools; safely use and care for portable and stationary power tools; estimate material requirements, create material lists and cut lists; and, given simple plans, accurately measure, mark, cut, and assemble various projects using hand and power tools.

This class takes place at a woodworking shop located at 824 Hampshire Street in Quincy, IL. All students will be required to sign a liability waiver before the class begins. Parents of younger teens are encouraged to attend.

NOTE: Many supplies will be given to students during the first class. Participating students must bring the following items to class each week:

  • Folder for hand-outs
  • Notebook paper

In this class students will learn how to create a piece of artwork in the style of famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. By using plastic plates, cups, and more, students will add their own colors and use heat guns to manipulate the plastic to look like blown glass. Some sculptures will be free-form standing or have the possibility of hanging.

NOTE: This class uses high-temperature heat guns to partially melt and distort plastic. Safety is paramount at the Art Center, so please come prepared to practice safety in our studio while using these dangerous tools.

Batik Fabric Dyeing

Over three class sessions, students will learn the basics of resist dyeing with melted wax and fabric dye. Participants will get two large bandanas to play with pattern and color. Students will explore different tools to apply the wax and ways to apply the dye to create amazing patterns and designs. Participants are welcome to bring up to a yard of their own prewashed, 100% cotton fabric or a garment (also prewashed and 100% cotton) to use in the class if they wish. This class is great for any fiber person to add to their skill set.

NOTE: This class is messy, so please wear clothes that can stand a splash of color.

Don’t have time for a full clay course but want to experience the potter’s wheel? Join us for this exciting one-night clay wheel-throwing experience at Quincy Art Center! Photo Release Policy

I understand that by registering myself or my child for class, I grant full permission to the Art Center to either use my or my child’s photograph, name, and/or likeness in any publication or advertising materials (printed and electronic, including, but not limited to, brochures, Facebook, Instagram, web content, etc.). I also waive all rights of privacy or compensation to which I may have in connection with the use of my or my child’s photograph, name, and/or likeness. If I do not give consent, I will submit notice in writing to the Art Center before the first class.

Code of Conduct

The Art Center and its employees reserve the right to remove participants from classes in cases of disruptive behavior, repeated insubordination toward a teacher or student, or other forms of misbehavior that negatively impact the classroom experience. For the first infraction, the student will receive an official warning from staff. If misbehavior continues, the parent/guardian will be informed of the child’s disruption personally by the Director of Education. Upon a third infraction, the student will be removed from the class entirely, and a refund may be given to the registrant based on the number of classes completed. If 75% or more of the class has been completed when a student is removed, no refund will be issued.
