Artist Bio/Statement: Kathy Hyer, a lifelong resident of Quincy, Illinois earned Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s degree in Education from Southwest Baptist University in Missouri.

She taught art for 33 years at Unity High School in Mendon, IL and in the Quincy Public School system. She taught art in fourth through sixth grades at Baldwin Intermediate School, then 7th through 9th grades at Quincy Junior High, and returned to the high school age students at Quincy Senior High before she retired in 2010. Hyer taught courses as an adjunct instructor at Quincy University, Culver-Stockton College and John Wood Community College. This exhibit displays her interest in mixed media bird-themed pieces. In these pieces she uses the techniques of charcoal pouring, collage and watercolor. Her collage materials make use of a variety of self-produced monoprints, magazines, maps and found materials.

“The pandemic prevented me from doing a lot of social things that I enjoy, but it has helped me to work in a series that I found interesting. I also discovered several online communities that helped increase my skills. Art has helped me understand that the end product is not a vision that I have to begin with. My art piece tells me what is needed and where and, then, is finished when it says it is!” says Hyer.

Hyer’s art pieces have been in Gallery 310 (Hannibal, MO) since 2010 and they have been accepted into various local art exhibits and her works can also be seen in several private art collections. She is a member of the Keokuk Art Center, the Quincy Art Center and the Hannibal Art Club.
